In order to frighten the population of Georgia to make it drop its support for the Confederate cause. The march of 60,000 men from November 15 to December 21, 1864, from Atlanta to Savannah was a morale buster. Soldiers didn't destroy the towns along their road, but they stole livestock and food and burned the houses and barns of those who tried to fight back.
