Why did Prescott order his soldiers to slow down or cease their firing of the muskets/rifels

    Because they were running low on ammunition.

    If the soldiers continued to fire at the rate they had been firing, they would quickly run out of ammo. And so, Prescott told them to hold their fire until the soldiers were closer to save ammo.
