    The Catholic Church had become the official religion of the Roman Empire when Rome fell in the 5th century. Their leaders in the new entities born after that became closely associated with the new kings and rulers, consolidating the position as a the official religion. This came together with material privileges such as land property for the church. Another major power they won was the power to annoint kings; it was the celestial authority consacrating worldly authorities.
