Why was China so important to the U. S. (and other countries) ?

    Because China is currently our largest goods trading partner with $659.8 billion in total goods trade during 2018.

    One reason is that China is just really, really big. One in five of all the people on the Earth lives in China. It's the world's second-largest economy after the U. S.
