The purpose of the EU in 1993

The Treaty of Maastricht comes into force on November 1, 1993, establishing the European Union. The treaty aims at enhancing political and economic integration by creating a single currency - the euro -, a common foreign and security policy, common citizenship rights and cooperation in several areas. 12 nations had ratified it. The EU embodies the members' will for cooperation and unity in Europe.
