Answer: pan (in Greek) means "everything", psyche (in Greek) means "soul" Soul had different meaning depending on culture, religion etc. (soul was conceptualized in different ways by ancient Greeks and medieval Christians for example). Panpsychism holds that (literally) everything has its "soul" (immaterial substance) ... does not have to be necessarily divine spark, part of God, but an immaterial substance (essence), sort of immaterial and invisible counterpart to what is material, visible.

Explanation: read Henri F. Ellenberger ... pan-psychism is only one member of big family of "psychisms" that underwent great renewal during European romanticism.
