When Japan attacked Pearl harbor they killed 2403 from which only 68 were civilians. In comparison to the whole war, this was not a huge loss of life but when put into a perspective that it was from one attack it was devastating. They also managed to destroy more than 300 airplanes and cripple or put out of service 20 US ships. Unfortunately for Japan, this did not cripple the Pacific fleet and since the USA was an industrial giant they replaced their losses quickly.
