Why was the debate over Kansas-Nebraska act so bitter

    It was a bill that divided the Kansas and Nebraska territory into 2 parts and allowed settlers in each territory to decide whether or not to allow slavery. Lincoln asserted that slavery should not spread to new territories. Lincoln didn't want slavery at all.
