Why did Europeans turn for inspiration to the art and learning of classical Greece and Rome as they rebuilt society after the devastation of the plague? Renaissance humanism provided more scope for secular individuals to act in an expanding world. Renaissance scholars defended the traditional teachings of the church in medicine and science. Islamic teachings supported the validity of Greek science. Humanist ideals were similar to the Ming dynasty's successful Confucian world view.
