    Disease and sickness was a significant problem until proper sewer systems and the like became widespread in cities.

    Cities increased opportunity for education, because there were more people and thus greater demand for education. There were also more opportunities for cultural activities, because more people meant more variety in culture, and thus greater opportunity.

    And Native American attacks were most frequent at frontiers, not heavily populated areas like cities.
