How was the process in which the north west territories became states different from how the 13 colonies became states

    The United States of America gained control over large area of land after the American revolutionary war that was in the western side of 13 colonies. America got this control from Britain after treaty of pairs was passed in 1783. These large frontier land was recognized as the north western territories. These States after some time became the states such as ohio, Kentucky, Tennessee, etc. The territories were governed by a governor under a martial law. 13 colonies were formed by Queen Elizabeth as she wanted to establish British Empire in america. So, both the territories and 13 colonies were formed in different ways.
