The city of New Orleans or Nouvelle Orléans was named after the French Regent, Duke Phillipe II after the decision to found the city was taken in Paris in 1717. The location to be later known as New Orleans was chosen by Jean-Baptiste Le Moyen de Bienville, responsible for the founding of the city.
