The decree authorized the freedom of worship, with certain limits, for the Protestants. The promulgation of this edict ended the religious wars in France that devastated the country during the 16th century. With the revocation of the Edict by Louis XIV, for political and religious reasons, religious tolerance comes to an end in France.
