How did computers function before microprocessors?

Before microprocessors, computers had several different components. For example, the central processing unit did not also include circuits for additional functionality. Instead, a number of integrated circuits worked together to provide equivalent functionality. Before that, non-digital computers performed calculations even more slowly.
