The manorial system existed in the medieval period. It is a political, social, economic system by which peasants were made dependent on the lords. The basic unit of Manorial system was a Manor, a large estate of land and a lord who controlled the peasants working in his manor.

The peasants were made dependent by means of serfdom. This system made the landed and aristocratic classes more powerful. The peasants though worked for the lord, got protection for themselves from attackers and to their lands as long as they were loyal to the lord. This way, they could stay safe and their rights over the land were secure.

On the other hand, the lord got the agricultural produce from the peasant and the peasants provided with food and other services by the lord. The Manorial system though benefitted both the lord and peasants, made the peasants dependent on the lord.
