    a. the Battle of Lake Erie

    Explanation:

The battle of Lake Erie took place on September 10, 1813, within the Anglo-American War. It faced an American navy commanded by Oliver Hazard Perry who had nine vessels and 54 guns against a British fleet of six ships with 63 guns commanded by Commodore Robert Heriot Barclay. The battle ended with the American victory.

In 1812 the United States of America was in the process of expansion. The United States attacked and conquered territories from the south to Native Americans and between the Spanish colonies of Florida and Miami. The US negotiated with France the acquisition of New Orleans and set his sights to the north, towards Canada. Britain had established an effective blockade with whom it wanted to trade with Europe and had stopped American merchants. So the United States prepared for war.

At the beginning of the hostilities, Britain had the provincial navy forces consisting of only two ships, the Royal George and the Earl of Moira plus two schooners on Lake Ontario and a brig, a schooner, and an armed transport ship on Lake Erie.

The United States was even worse endowed. It had the Oneida brig and an armed transport ship. President James Madison ordered the navy to build squads that gave it superiority in both lakes. The new force, already operational on November 8, had the Oneida and six ships adapted to the lake. The fleet pursued without reward the two British ships but as winter approached the two sides concentrated their activity to the construction of more ships.

The British built 30 frigates of 30 guns and two corvettes. The Americans built a new corvette, the 24-barrel Madison, modified the Lady of the Lake and began work on a 26-gun frigate. The two parts also had several sailboats and rowing boats, with a single cannon in the bow.
