He became the Duke of Brabant at the age of 9 as his elder brother and the heir to the throne had died a year before Leopold was born. He also became the sun-lieutenant in the army. By the time of his accession in 1865, he was lieutenant-general. Before that, he became a member of Belgium Senate in the year 1885. Later on in his life, Leopold went on to become the sole founder of Congo Free State.
