Along with the Civil Rights Act of 1964, the Voting Rights Act of 1965 was a fundamental anti-discrimination act. The adoption of the Voting Rights Act contributed to the full participation of African Americans in the political life of the country, providing a guarantee of suffrage. It was forbidden to use literacy tests in the future and the US Secretary of Justice was instructed to institute legal proceedings to abolish election taxes during state elections.
