    Explanation: it was Montesquieu who spoke about power (up to then more or less concentrated in hand of absolute monarch) being separated: executive (monarch, president, prime-minister), legislative (legislature, i. e. National Assembly, Parliament, Congress), judicial (system of justice courts). Sometime expression of "checks and balances" is used. Separation of powers is usually explained in detail in the constitutional text.
