Camille di Cavour was Piedmont's, first man. He advocated the unity of Italy to which Piedmont would lead. In 1854, a Crimean war broke out between Russia and the Ottoman Empire. France and Great Britain supported the Ottoman Empire. Cavour had acted against Russia and hoped it would win their trust. His plan succeeded, and he received the support of the French.

A further project was to reduce the influence of Austria in Italy. It was agreed that Piedmont would provoke Austria for war. The plan succeeded, and in two difficult battles, the Italians backed by the French defeated Austria. A peace treaty was signed, but Venice was still in the hands of Austria. Driven by the euphoria and initial success, Italian nationalists enter the scene. The future holder of Italian independence will be Giuseppe Garibaldi. Finally, Italy will gain independence in 1861.
