    The United States launched the succesful Plan Marshall to allow ravaged European economies to recover and build new prosperity; the United States organized and maintained an airlift to carry supplies to a Berlin blocked by Soviet troops in 1948; the USA supported the creation of a Western Germany under a democratic government; it also sponsored the creation of NATO to oppose a perceived Soviet threat.
