According to the book Old Dominion, New Commonwealth, why did Virginia lose its influence in the nineteenth century?

    In the American civil war (1861-1865), Virginia and the other few states seperate themselves from the union. People of Virginia were on the confederates side. As the confederates lost the battle against the union, Virginia lose its infulence.
