    Purchasing the territory of Louisiana by the president of the United States in 1803 from the leader of France known as Napoleon Bonaparte has increased the size of the United States to almost double. Jefferson wanted to buy land for agriculture activities as the population of the country would flourish. The port of New Orleans and access to Mississippi river provided for shipping of crops by farmers.
