    These special laws were passed by southern states between 1865 and 1866, and were called the "black laws" or "black codes".

    These laws were passed to limit and control former slaves and they include;

    • Laws regulating marriage (black people were allowed to only marry other black people but not white people).

    • Laws restricting ownership of property.

    • Laws limiting black people's access to courts.

    • Laws restricting carriage of weapons (blacks were not allowed to carry or keep firearms, except those in the military).
