In 1890, railroad segregation was introduced in Louisiana, which is considered the beginning of the Jim Crow Laws era. By 1915, in every southern state, there were similar laws. For example, there were restrictions on voting: the election tax and literacy test, which applied only to the Black population. The literacy test consisted of reading the entire text of the US Constitution and the Declaration of Independence by heart. As a result, in the 1900 election, in Alabama, out of 181.5 thousand black people, only 3 thousand voted.

By the middle of the 20th century, under pressure from the public, the US Supreme Court began to recognize these laws as unconstitutional. The last of these laws was repealed in 1964, after considering the Heart of Atlanta Motel v. United States case, when segregation in public places (restaurants, hotels, and shops) was prohibited in Georgia.
