One event was the First Sino-Japanese War of 1894-1895, the first major imperialist gain for Japan. It forced China to cede Taiwan and Pescadores and make concessions regarding Korea, whose independence and autonomy the Chinese Empire had to recognize. These were the first steps in the later annexation of Korea by Japan. Both sides signed the Treaty of Shimonoseki.

A second major event was the Japanese victory in the Russo-Japanese War of 1905. Having defeated Russia, a major European power, Japan entered the exclusive club of world's great powers.

A third event is the transfer of special privileges of Germany in Shandong, China, to Japan after WWI. This consolidated the position of Tokyo in China and caused a massive outcry among the Chinese public.
