The Black Hawk War was caused by the invation, from the Iowa Indian Territory, of the U. S. State of Illinois, by members of three different Native American tribes: the Sauks, the Meskwakis, and the Kickapoos. The War was very brief, and U. S. Army quickly defeated the tribes.

Even if none of these tribes were considered among the "five civilized tribes", the event motivated the American Government to seek the removal of the tribes to territories in the Western United States. This policy came to be implemented under the Indian Removal Act.
