The Silk Road is an old network of routes, the main of which connected the Mediterranean region by land via Central Asia with East Asia. Silk and other commodities such as ivory, gold and precious stones were transported through the Silk Road, mainly by caravans.

The actual trade on the silk road took place through intermediaries. The caravans consisted of peoples living along the Silk Road. The Chinese themselves did not charter their popular silk to Rome, but sold it to the Indians, who resold it again. The Chinese and Romans had no direct trade contacts.

The roots of the Silk Road are based on the conquests of Alexander the Great in the 300s BC and especially China's efforts to gain political and military power in Central Asia in the second century BC, which led to the emergence of trade relations between the West and the East. The use of routes for silk exports began with the Roman interest in silk from the first century of the AD era. The Silk Road declined after the disintegration of the Mongol Empire in the 14th century and finally faded in the 15th century with the discovery of sea routes between China and Europe.
