Stephen Douglas revoked the Missouri comprise which stated that it is not a slave holding state. But he decided to divide the Missouri territory in to two called Kansas and Nebraska. There was a disproportion in the number of free and slave states and because of which whether Kansas and Nebraska to become a free or slave state was left to the people' choice. Kansas proposed legality of slavery which was not accepted by the other states and violence cropped up which took lives of many in Kansas.

An enslaved African American who had been taken by their owners to Missouri territory which is a free state as per the Missouri compromise claimed for his freedom and he was Dred Scott. US Supreme Court did not grant him freedom instead that he could not be considered under the category of US citizen because he belonged to the African American ethnicity.
