    much of the southern US was destroyed during the civil war. the plantations and crops were destroyed. the south needed to rebuild. the rebuilding of the south is called the reconstruction. the reconstruction lasted from 1865-1877.

    The land was all given to the union after the civil war. and the US was restored.
