Why did Martin Luther's ideas gain widespread support in northern Europe in the 16th century?

Many people sincerely thought that Martin Luther's ideas and Lutheranism were the best ways to reform for church corruption. However, there were also people who supported him only because they wanted to gain control of valuable church property.
