The African American civil rights movement deeply affected the development of other movements. This movement showed people that civil action and disobedience could be used to achieve many different political goals.

For example, this movement impacted the feminist movement of the 1960s. Feminists adopted many of the strategies of African Americans, such as protesting. Another movement that benefitted from such strategies was the pacifist movement, which played a very important role when it came to ending the war in Vietnam.

On December 1, 1955, the modern civil rights movement began when Rosa Parks, an African-American woman, was arrested for refusing to move to the back of the bus in Montgomery, Alabama.

The civil rights movement was a struggle for social justice that took place mainly during the 1950s and 1960s for blacks to gain equal rights under the law in the United States. The Civil War had officially abolished slavery, but it didn't end discrimination against blacks-they continued to endure the devastating effects of racism, especially in the South. By the mid-20th century, African Americans had had more than enough of prejudice and violence against them. They, along with many whites, mobilized and began an unprecedented fight for equality that spanned two decades.

The Civil Rights Act of 1964, which ended segregation in public places and banned employment discrimination on the basis of race, color, religion, sex or national origin, is considered one of the crowning legislative achievements of the civil rights movement.
