The "Gilded Age" was the period from 1870 to 1890, in which the United States went through an economical, industrial and demographic boom. During this time, the number of companies, factories, banks, and other businesses increased, leading to a higher demand for new workers. Only those who had the best qualifications would be accepted, and receive the best salaries. Whereas those without studies would work for low wages and high rents. Therefore, in order to prepare the entire population for the requirements needed, the number of colleges and universities increased.
