When the United States entered the Second World War in 1941, it was still recovering from the effects of the Great Depresion. The labor and industrial demands of war had positive effects. Unemployment rates fell from 25% to 10% almost immediately; more women joined the workforce as more hands were needed in the arms industry producing for the war and men were recruited and sent away. The US economy grew about 8% annually between 1939 and 1944. Between 1941 and 1943, it grew more than 17% per year. Important sectors with underutilized potential - manufacturing, auto industry, shipbuilding - were geared up for full capacity. Income tax levels were raised and by 1945, the taxpayer base had increased to 43 million people (from 4 million in 1939).
