Transportation affected American colonial areas in two critical ways. Firstly, many of the large settlements were in deep seaports or along rivers. This was alike to the evolution of European and ancient civilizations. Waterways and ports were essential to trade due to the lack of fast and reliable land transport.

This forced most of the merchants to settle in port cities or along rivers. These often sold goods located in areas to reduce transport costs and to be paid before resale. For simplicity, this led most of people to settle in these areas to buy goods. Because most non-agricultural work related to these areas.
