    Trench warfare.

    This military strategy during World War I was very defensive. This was when the use of different weapons, such as machine guns and artillery, became common and very effective. Troops would sit and wait, without running out in the open and pushing. This was a good strategy for the most part and saved a lot of people from aimlessly getting killed.
