Practically after the end of World War Two, serious differences between the Western Allies and the Soviet Union surfaced regarding the treatment and the future of a vanquished Germany. It was divided in four occupation zones. The Soviet zone included Berlin, also occupied by all the victorious powers. In 1948, the US gave economic aid to Germany and there were plans to introduce a single currency in the Western zones. Alarmed by these plans, the Soviet government imposed a blockade of the Western occupation areas in Berlin, trying to limit Western access to the city. The US started an airlift that lasted for a year to assist Berlin's population. It was the first conflict of the Cold War.

Soviet leader Stalin ordered this blockade June 24th 1948 to May 12 1949. Cutting off all transportation through West Berlin and West Germany, to limit Great Britain, US, and Frances travel to their sectors of Berlin, which lye in Russian/Germany territory (East Germany).
