When Tan was a young girl, her mother's "limited" English embarrassed her because she felt this also represented the quality of what her mother had to say. Growing up and understanding all of the difficulties her mother faced from restaurants and stores changed Amy's attitude about her mother's English. Amy recognized that the people judging her mother did not know her. When Amy became a writer, she decided to write for the audience that would enjoy reading her books, like her mother, instead of writing for the critics that would judge her work.
