The main goals of the national convention:

Naming party's "President &Vice President" candidates. Bringing various factions together for common purpose. Adopting the party's platform, basic principles.

Such conventions are held within a party to elect a presidential candidate/nominee by a majority of combined delegated votes. Also, in such conventions the new principles and goals that are drafted by the party are put into enactment.

New rules and other regulatory requirements are adopted including nomination processes for the president for the cycle of election ahead. The delegates that take part in the convention are elected at a state level to elect a suitable candidate for the convention.
