The correct order of events is:

1 - Japan invades its neighboring countries in search of natural resources.

2 - The U. S. halts shipments of resources to Japan due to Japan's Pacific aggression

3 - Japan secretly makes plans to remove U. S. influence from the Pacific

4 - Japan attacks Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, killing more than 2,000 Americans.

5 - The United States enters the war on the side of the Allied Powers

Before Japan attacked the U. S. tensions between the two countries had been rising for years. The U. S. didn't take well Japan's attempts of expansion into China and other territories. In order to press Japan out of its expansionist policies, the American government passed embargos on oil and other important goods traveling to Japan.

Japan who had realized in 1940 a treaty with fascist Italy and Germany decided to attack the U. S. first to take advantage of the surprise element. The attack on Pearl Harbor happened in late 1941 and led to the American entry into World War II.

    Explanation:

Evere since the mid-19th century and Commodore Perry's sailing into Tokyo Bay, the Japanese were aware of their military and economic inferiority comparing to US. They started reforms, industrialization and modernization of the country which was done by the end of the century.

However, this process required lot of resources, metals, steel, oil etc. which Japanese islands were lacking on. In the 20th century began their expansion on neighboring countries, but only the events from 1930s provoked answer from Western countries. Annexation of Manchuria and war with China led to halt of resource shipments to Japan.

Deprived of oil and other resources (80% of Japan's oil arrived from the US), Japan needed to expand further but was aware that it wasn't possible as long US had influence over the region.

Although negotiations and diplomatic meetings were taking place to resolve such a conflicting situation, the Japanese were secretly planning to reduse US's influence in the South-East Pacific.

In Decembar 1941. they launched a surprise attack on Pearl Harbor, American military base in Hawaii, killing over 2000 people.

Since this attack happened surprisingly, without any previous declaration of war, it caused immediate reaction from the USA, resulting in declaring war on Japan and joining the WW2 on the side od Allied Powers.
