Why might a lobbyist work to get a member of congress to support a particular pork barrel project

    Because the lobbyist might personally benefit from the pork barrel project, or the company he works for, might benefit from it.

    For example, a lobbyist working from a railroad company could try to convince a particular congress person to give money to a rail line that could only benefit his company and a few people, instead of benefiting the general public.
