Why did most Americans think the United States should extend to the Pacific Ocean?

They feared invasion by Mexico.

    The idea that god has given the right to take over every part of North America to US is known as Manifest Destiny. The term was coined by Newspaper writer John O'Sullivan in 1845. According to Manifest Destiny the Americans were given a special job to grow bigger and open the borders of freedom to more people. It was due to this idea that Americans kept expanding toward the western frontier until the western frontier was declared to be closed in 1893 by superintendent of the Census.
