    He sent an encripted telegram to the German ambassador in Mexico in the same year.

    The telegram was an invitation for Mexico to join with Germany in a future war against he United States. Zimmermann tried to convice Mexico by promising the defeat of America, and the recovery of the former Mexican territories lost during the Mexican-American War of 1846-1848.
