    During the pre-classic period many pyramids, palaces, temples and cities were developed. The society during this period followed the practice of human sacrifice, worshiped many gods, and cultivated corn. Maya, Olmecs, and Zapotec were some of the civilizations that arose during this period. The Classic period saw the emergence of independent city-states throughout the Maya region. The Teotihuacan controlled the Valley of Mexico. During the Post-classic, many of the city-states were indulge in warfare, and there was progress in weapons and population growth. The Aztec empire emerged as a power over the Valley of Mexico region after the Teotihuacan.
