In the last decades of the 19th century, the USA economy experienced high growth and industrialization. It became more global, with investments and trade links in a rising number of places in the world. This considerable growth of the country's economic might forced a more active involvement in foreign affairs. American interests and their protection demanded it. The Spanish-American War that gave the US possession of new territories and the constant intevention in the affairs of the Caribbean, justified by the Roosevelt Corollary to the Monroe Doctrine, are examples of this larger role in international relations.
