    Depending on context, like if your teacher means the first to "officially" discover North America in European terms it would technically be the Spanish because that's what the early European recognized, but if you're teacher means the first to "unofficially" make settlements it was the Vikings, lead by Leaf Erickson. They landed in Canada originally and made settlement there in houses built from holes in the ground
