Nixon defeated the Democratic nominee, incumbent vice president Hubert Humphrey. The election of 1968 was a major election as it permanently disrupted the New Deal coalition that had dominated presidential politics since 1932. The public reacted horribly to the soldiers that came back from the war, spitting on them and calling them horrible names. The people of america thought that the vietnamese war was something that shouldn't have happened and something that the united states should have intervened in.
