The correct answer is C) man vs. man.

Roger Chillingworth exacting his revenge on Reverend Dimmesdale is an example of the type of conflict"man vs. man."

In this type of conflict, the characters confront each other for any reason raised during the plot of the story. One of them, the antagonist in most cases, is the one who interferes with the protagonist of the history and impedes the other to reach his/her goals. The situation has to be resolved at the end of the story.

The two characters are fictional people from the novel "The Scarlet Letter," written by Nathaniel Hawthorne in 1850.

It's D, man versus self because Chillingworth hates Dimmesdale with a passion that revenge becomes his reason to live. Dimmesdale allegedly had a daughter with Roger's wife Hester, Roger cannot simply carry on with his life and even becomes a doctor to be close to Dimmesdale whose health is deteriorating. When finally Dimmesdale confesses to his sin and dies, Roger Chillington loses all his will and dies shortly afterwards dies as well.
