Carl Schurz was against the imperialism that the United States was implementing by fighting in the Philippine War. He denounced the acquisition of several territories as a violation of the principles of the United States Constitution and the Declaration of Independence. The Spanish American War was not something to be proud of even though he commended the soldiers for their efforts. He mentioned the purpose of the war should have been the liberation of the people from the Philippines but unfortunately it became a war of conquest, the United States needed to withdraw carefully to make sure the American principles would remain intact.
