Throughout History, humans around the world have altered the environment for the survival of an increasing population. The first great alteration that humans have made in the environment was the Neolithic Revolution, about 12,000 years ago. It consisted in the invention of great scale agriculture which allowed human communities to settle down, to domesticate animals and start a production economy, instead of the recollection economy that was the hallmark of previous gathering and hunting lifestyle. These benefits that agriculture brought to human societies also permitted to increase and expand the population as never before, since agriculture allows the accumulation of food and resources. It was a fundamental factor in the creation of large agrarian empires. On the other hand, the modern alteration of environment started with the Industrial Revolution, that started about 300 years ago, which enabled the exploitation of natural resources in a global scale, in an exponential proportion. It brought the benefits of a unified global economy, fast transportation, instantaneous communication and an increase in life expectancy.
